Concept
In the coming years, Leipzig intends to develop the area around the former historic wholesale market hall in Leipzig and the adjacent, largely commercial areas into a district with various uses, with a focus on commerce and a lively area center with an urban character. Our open space concept for the area follows the principle of 'volume', which decreases from north to south and has a gradual progression from the urban northern section around the Kohlrabizirkus and the increasingly green center, to the preserved birch grove south of the Schlachthofbrücke.
The individual districts are directly linked to one another via an open-space promenade and a private transport artery, with a particular focus on bicycle traffic (bicycle parking facilities, self-service bicycle service stations including e-bike charging stations). The different districts all have their own internal squares with a semi-public character that is specific to each district. They can be understood as individual leaves with closely meshed passageways (the leaf veins) and squares (the cell nuclei). These cell nuclei are extensively surrounded by chloroplasts, the urban greenery. The preservation of the existing trees formed the leitmotif for the urban planning arrangement of the buildings and their volumetric formulation. There is also an intention to generously reduce the sealed areas, while at the same time maintaining sufficient areas for unrestricted usage options and flexibility of the existing businesses. An iconic green roof landscape, the so-called "leaf", completes the concept of an expanded green space. The green landscape is to be planted with resistant tree species that are compatible with the urban climate and the sponge city principle is to be applied on a large scale.
